Abstract

It has been over a year since Myanmar came under military rule. Since the coup of 2021, the poverty-stricken Southeast Asian country has attracted international media attention, but for all the wrong reasons. The country of over 60 million people of diverse ethnicities continues to witness public protests against the junta, anti-military operations that force hundreds of thousands of villagers to flee their places and live in makeshift shelters with their young children, experiencing all sorts of hardships from hunger to disease to lack of security. A year has passed since the coup, which gives us an opportunity to reflect. In the following study, we will attempt to do so, paying particular attention to the evolution of the internal security situation, the economic consequences of the complex crisis and the international dimension of military governance.
